A checklist for hiring across borders

The documents, approvals and contract decisions to settle before a new international hire starts.

Cross-border hiring is mostly sequencing. The offer, the right-to-work checks, the contract, the payroll setup and the first payday all depend on each other, and delays compound.

Settle the engagement type first: employee, contractor or employer-of-record arrangement. It decides which contract you need, which taxes apply and what you can legally ask the person to do.

Then collect documents in one place with clear expiry dates. A visa that expires in four months is a task for today, not a surprise later.

Finally, connect onboarding to payroll. A new hire who is fully onboarded but missing bank details still misses their first payday, so treat payment setup as part of onboarding rather than a separate finance request.
